Allergy

Allergy is a hypersensitivity to a particular substance that is inhaled, ingested or touched, and produces some characteristic symptoms. It is a pathological reaction of the immune system of the body, which is an exaggerated inflammatory response, inappropriate and harmful towards a stimulus (allergen) that is harmless and perfectly tolerated by most people.

The underlying mechanism of allergy focuses on the development of immunoglobulins, which are proteins required for the body's defense and that trigger the immunological cascade of reactions of inflammatory response and release of chemical substances as histamine. As a result, this mechanism forms structures that are recognized by specific cells, culminating in exaggerated responses that attack the body. The majority of allergy triggers a large amount of antibody called immunoglobulin type E.

The main allergens are the aeroallergens (pollen, mold spores, dust mites, feathers, or epithelial / animal hair), addictive substances (eg: present in paints, rubber, fabric softeners), insect venom, some foods, drugs and other products of industry.

Some allergies such as allergy to dust, animals or food, can manifest themselves throughout the year. Others, such as hay fever (which is an allergy to pollen), appear at certain times of the year.

It also shows regional differences, as a number of allergens are more prevalent in some parts of the world than in others. In addition, the allergy has a high hereditary component. The genetic predisposition of an individual to develop an allergy has an important role in its manifestation.
