What is it?

Diarrhea is an increase in volume, liquid or frequency of defecations. The symptoms are frequent stools soft and watery, which may be accompanied by abdominal pain, bloating and cramps. Diarrhea can be classified as acute, if lasts less than two weeks, or chronic, if  longer than four weeks.


  • gastrointestinal infections (bacterial or viral)
  • Food intolerance
  • Stress
  •  Irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, malabsorption syndromes
  • Medication



The most important treatment of diarrhea is to insure the replacement of fluids and electrolytes. In most of the cases the acute diarrhea is self-limited so the treatment with fluids and change of the regular diet is enough. In other cases when is severe diarrhea you should consult your doctor, so that you can have individualized treatment according to the origin of diarrhea.

If you have high fever or diarrhea longer than 48 to 72h and/or diarrhea with blood, you should consult a doctor.


Traveller's diarrhea

Traveller's diarrhea is very common, being most frequent in individuals that travel to tropical countries with warm and humid climate.

This can be caused by different microorganisms (virus, bacteria, parasites) and usually result in the ingestion of water or food poisoning.


  • Don't drink or wash your teeth with tap water
  • Avoid drinks with ice
  • Always try to make sure that food is properly cooked
  • Wash your hands carefully before eating
  • Avoid food like salads and peel off every fruit
  • Avoid to eat from street vendors
  • Avoid shellfish
